Buen día a todos,
quiero compartir con ustedes el premio que recibió un investigador del Instituto de Conservación de Ballenas, que está estudiando la ballena franca austral en la zona de Península Valdés, por su fotografía de una hembra con su cría nadando en el seno de una marea verde no tóxica en el Golfo Nuevo.
Me tocó analizar las muestras de fitoplancton, junto con Norma Santinelli y también compartidas con Rut Akselman y concluimos que fue una floración de Lepidodinium probablemente  L. chlorophorum (= Gymnodinium chlorophorum), aunque no pudimos verlo con MEB o MET.
Es una imagen maravillosa, tomada desde una avioneta, que nos pareció que valía la pena presentar en el concurso que organiza anualmente la Sociedad Británica de Ficología.

I'm pleased to announce that the 2009 winner of the Hilda Canter-Lund award is Mariano Sironi, of the Instituto de Conservación de Ballenas – Argentina.    The judges were impressed with the quality of all the shortlisted entries, but Mariano's image was a clear favourite.
 
The judging process involved each of the three judges ranking the six short-listed entries, with the image with the highest overall score gaining the prize.   This attempt to quantify what is essentially a subjective experience probably has wide confidence limits, so I won't divulge the ranks of the other five shortlisted images.  However, I willl emphasise, again, that we felt that the overall standard of the shortlist was high.   Hopefully, you'll all try again next year!
 
We will keep the images on the BPS website so that everyone can continue to enjoy them.  I would also like to add contact details for each shortlisted image (name, institution, e-mail address) - please could you confirm that you are happy with this?
 
Once again, congratulations on reaching the short-list and thanks for setting a high standard for next year's competition.
