Subject: PhD position Ectocarpus sexual reproduction.
PhD position. Ectocarpus sexual reproduction. The Research Group Phycology (Ghent University, Belgium) has a vacancy for a 4-year position leading to a PhD. The project involves the identification and characterization of sex-specific proteins and genes in the brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus. The primary aim is to isolate lectins and glycoproteins known to mediate cell recognition between male and female gametes. The recognition process is viewed as crucial step in sexual reproduction, and evolution of the genes involved may ultimately provide useful insights in reproductive isolation and diversification. The project, funded by the Ghent University, runs in a collaboration with the Laboratory Biochemistry and Glycobiology (Prof. Els Van Damme). The successful candidate will join a team of academics and researchers working diversification of marine macroalgae (http://users.ugent.be/phycology/) as well as experts in carbohydrate-lectin interactions. Applications are invited from suitably qualified postgraduate candidates. Any previous experience in any of the following fields is considered a plus point:
1.. macroalgal culturing techniques
2.. isolation and identification of proteins and peptides
3.. bio-informatics
The closing date is 1 December September 2008. For more detailed information on the project, infrastructure and working environment contact:
