We found what we thought were fossil testate amoebae's from early Eocene continental shelf material--approx. 150m water depth too.

Interesting question - they are definitely terrestrial and shallow marine not usre if they occur in deep water, and I am fairly sure they have only a limited fossil record - see the link for a  recent paper with references to other fossil occurrences

I found them at the SEM in samples from the middle Eocene (Lutetian) of Austral Basin (Argentina). It seems that it is not birefringent as I didn't see them at the OM.
