I have been copied in on the correspondence you have had with IODP about biostratigraphic software and must take issue with your contribution to this discussion.
A StrataBugs licence does not cost $5000/year as you state.  For small businesses there is a one off charge (currently £5366) and we do offer an optional maintenance contract (currently £537).
However, for academic institutions (and IODP would be considered as such) we offer a range of licencing options, outright purchase or various leasing arrangements at a fraction of this cost.  You of all people should know this as you have licenced StrataBugs in the past for your students at the University of Nebraska at a very favourable rate!
Regarding chart size – our major clients are in industry and they like big charts.  However, if you were familiar with the lastest version of StrataBugs you would know that charts of publishable quality are now possible.  In fact I have three papers in press that use StrataBugs charts!
We request that you immediately retract your incorrect and misleading comments in writing and send to all those you previously circulated.

Hi all,

We are starting to explore options for replacing the IODP DESClogik application. As part of this process, we are exploring both off-the-shelf software packages, as well as developing our own in-house products for core description and paleontological data capture.

I’m familiar with Stratabugs and Bugwin; are any of you using other products? We want to make sure we are as inclusive as possible during this initial exploratory phase.
