Long term conservation of marine microbial resources

 

 

Training Course at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, Oban, Scotland.

 

17-18 February 2011

 

Marine microbes are an under-explored and as yet virtually unexploited biotechnological resource. Future biotechnologies will have an absolute requirement for long-term preservation techniques (freeze-drying and cryopreservation).

This 2 day course will include: lectures on the fundamental science of long-term preservation and   "hands on"  application of conventional as well as novel preservation techniques. 

 

Topics covered: 

 

  a.. Cryopreservation theory and application 
  b.. Freezing and conserving in liquid nitrogen 
  c.. Freeze drying theory and preparation 
  d.. Health and safety implications in cryopreservation 
  e.. Ownership, Intellectual Property and microbial diversity 
  f.. Data management 
 

The course will be led by tutors with more than 40 years combined experience  of developing and applying preservation techniques for the conservation of biotechnological resources. Tutors include: Drs John Day, Roland Fleck (NIBSC), Dave Green, Keri Page and Svenja Heesch

 

Demonstrations of state of the art freeze-drying and cryopreservation equipment from Linkam Scientific Instruments Ltd and Planer plc. will be included.

 

Cost 450 GBP per person, plus VAT, including meals, 3 nights accommodation in The Oban Bay Hotel and local transport. 

Partners in the EU funded ASSEMBLE project can send two participants free of charge.
