Dear Dr ,

I write today - *International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 22 May * -
to invite you to join BioNET in using the opportunity of the 2010
International Year of Biodiversity to celebrate taxonomy's contributions to
this year's IDB theme: Biodiversity, Development and Poverty Alleviation, as
well as other aspects of biodiversity conservation, management and
sustainable use.

"Taxonomy in Action" is a showcase of species images accompanied by short
key messages on the practice, benefits and uses of taxonomy (please click *
here<http://x.jtrk47.net/y.z?l=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bionet-intl.org%2Fopencms%2Fopencms%2FresourceCentre%2FbionetOutreach%2Fpdf%2FTaxonomy_in_Action-template-20-05-22.ppt&e=1004&j=247794683&t=h>
* for a template and examples - 1.4Mb).

We invite you to send us

   1. high quality images of species
   2. matching text (1-3 sentences in English) giving details on this
species, e.g. explaining where it was discovered, by who, when, what is
special about this species, whether it is endangered, etc
   3. 1-2 sentences in English how taxonomy helped to discover, identify or
protect the species, and what impact this had on society.

The BioNET Secretariat will compile the images and stories and create
various types of promotional material highlighting the importance of
taxonomy, e.g. posters, post cards, booklets, presentations, and more.
Digital products will be available via the BioNET website to be used widely
for promoting taxonomy.

Please send your *images and stories latest by 31 July 2010* to be
considered for the products launched at the tenth Conference of the Parties
to the Convention on Biological Diversity, October 2010, Japan*.* Of course
we will credit you and your institutions for your contributions (text and /
or images).

We are eagerly looking forward to collaborating with you on this project and
encourage you to participate. Together we will be able to create the type of
high impact product so often asked for to raise the profile of taxonomy with
key sectors of society, including taxonomy users, policy makers and
funders.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Smith
