PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY has an opening for a senior scientist at its Marine Science Laboratory in Sequim, Washington, the Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future. Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, marine and environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, and marine biotechnology, the MSL is emerging as a leader in discovering and evaluating renewable energy sources from marine systems as well as understanding the long-term impacts of human activities on marine resources.

 

This position will provide leadership to a science and technology agenda that will address challenging issues associated with macroalgae as a renewable energy feedstock. The successful candidate will serve as a lead investigator and developer of projects and programs based on macroalgae for algal biofuels R&D. Expertise is sought in areas such as innovative approaches to strain development, optimization and scale-up of cultures, and conversion of algal biomass or derived products to fuels and commercially valuable coproducts. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in this field and will be expected to develop independent programs and engage in collaborative programs within PNNL and with other institutions. Responsibilities will also include developing and maintaining client relations with federal agencies, such as the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense, and industrial sponsors.

 

A background in advanced applications in cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or metabolic engineering as they relate to algal biology and biofuels production is preferred. A distinguished record of scientific achievement exemplified in peer-reviewed scientific publications and successful program development in the relevant fields in algal biology and algal biofuels production is expected. Applicants should possess a PhD in fields such as biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, plant developmental biology, microbiology, phycology or equivalent, plus at least seven to 10 years experience in algal biology and biotechnology relevant to biofuels production. Rank is commensurate with the level of accomplishments and experience of the successful candidate.
