Opportunity in Invasive Biology
PDF and/or MSc
Mount Allison University
Sackville
New Brunswick
Canada
We seek applications for an opening in the invasive biology of diatoms. Depending on qualifications the position may be at the Postdoctoral or MSc level. The project is a part of the Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network (CAISN) research program funded by NSERC to examine the vectors and pathways delivering AIS to Canadian waters and to identify key factors that affect their successful establishment. The successful candidate will focus on diatoms.
The ideal candidate will have experience in molecular taxonomy and/or multivariate statistics of large datasets. Initial support will be for one year, with possibility of extension either in invasive biology or in research on Arctic phytoplankton.
To apply, please send a curriculum vitae (or resume), thesis abstract and contact information for three academic references to Dr. Irena Kaczmarska, Department of Biology, Mount Allison University, 63B York Street, Sackville, N.B. E4L 1G7, Canada, e-mail address: iehrman at mta.ca.

Benthic macroalgal ecology, ecophysiology, phylogeography (especially Sargassum)
Hong Kong Research Grants Council
The Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) has recently launched a new programme offering International PhD Fellowship for international students to study at any of the eight Hong Kong tertiary institutions. The scheme is rather attractive financially and offers a stipend of no less than HK$ 20,000 (around US$ 2,500) per month for 3 years, plus HK$ 10,000 per year for conference attendance or research related activities. There is no restriction on the field of studies.
Although the applicants are asked to apply directly online at http://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/hkphd/, with deadline being Dec 1, 2009, candidates nominated by any of the universities in Hong Kong will likely have a greater chance of being accepted. In other words, chances will be much greater if you already have a laboratory or supervisor willing to take you in.
My laboratory at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is working on benthic macroalgal ecology, ecophysiology, phylogeography (especially Sargassum) in the Northwest Pacific and Southeast Asian regions, systematics of Sargassum and applied phycology. If you are interested in applying for this Hong Kong PhD fellowship to come to my lab, I invite you to kindly get in touch. Kindly send me a copy of your CV, a short write up of your area of interest, with a draft research plan.
