The 6th Regional Symposium of the IFAA will be held in Milano, from 1 to 5 July 2009. 

Following a consolidate tradition of our symposia, the scientific topics cover any aspects of calcareous algae and microbialites, including their present-day distribution and abundance. 

In addition, we are inviting to present your contribution to a cross-cut topic with strong implications in biology, palaeontology, sedimentology, geology and climatology: the quantification (in space or time, at any scale) of the carbonate production of calcareous algae.

Although calcareous algae commonly occur both in the present-day shelf environments at all latitudes and in the fossil record, we still need a tentative quantification of their abundance, in space and time. Calcareous algae are sensitive to the expected consequences of global change, therefore our contribution will be particularly important to a wide scientific community, not only to algae specialists.

Therefore, especially welcome are contributions aimed at the identification/delimitation of marine habitats dominated by calcareous algae, also by geophysical survey, and all approaches to the quantification of living/fossil calcareous algae in different environmental/paleoenvironmental settings. 

The Symposium is jointly organized by the University of Milano-Bicocca, Department of Geological Sciences and Geotechnologies, and by the University of Genova, Dip.Te.Ris. Geologists and paleontologists of the University of Genova have been studying coralline-rich outcrops of the Tertiary Piedmont Basin since the end of the XIX Century (G. Rovereto, M. Airoldi, S. Conti, V.I. Mastrorilli), producing the scientific descriptions of dozens of new species that are housed in the Genova Dip.Te.Ris. 

All scientific sessions will be held at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Department of Geological Sciences and Geotechnologies, Piazza della Scienza 4, Milano.
