The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy of Natural
Sciences in Philadelphia has an immediate opening for a full-time Diatom
Analyst. Specific activities include identification and taxonomy of
diatoms, data analysis, and writing scientific manuscripts.
DUTIES: A primary responsibility is identification and enumeration of diatom
taxa in samples collected from a variety of waterbodies throughout the
United States, with an emphasis on rivers and streams. Investigation and
resolution of taxonomic issues is also essential. Another key
responsibility is analysis of data to develop and evaluate diatom-based

requires close and effective communication with Academy project team members
and administrators, as well as fulfilling Quality Assurance /Quality Control
requirements and keeping well organized and detailed records.

strong interest and background in diatom taxonomy, particularly current

water quality indicators, and related data analysis skills, are highly
desirable. Organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to write
clearly are important components of this position.
Familiarity with Windows-based personal computers and software, particularly

spreadsheets, and Internet communication is important. Experience with LM
image acquisition and manipulation, and use of SEM, are desirable.
