Post-doctoral Position: Plankton Ecology
The Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) at Western Washington University is seeking a post-doctoral research associate to conduct research in plankton ecology under the supervision of Dr. Suzanne Strom and teach a graduate level course in Biological Oceanography or related discipline. The initial hire will be for the period October 1, 2007 - September 30, 2008. The appointment may be extended for an additional year pending availability of funding and job performance. The research component of the position is funded by an NSF grant entitled "A post-genomic approach to Synechococcus - grazer interactions", and represents a collaboration between Dr. Strom (SPMC) and Drs. Brian Palenik and Bianca Brahamsha (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). The successful candidate will conduct research into predator-prey interactions among marine planktonic microbes, specifically investigating the role of Synechococcus interstrain variability and cell surface characteristics in regulating predation by marine protist grazers. There will be opportunity to develop other research projects as well. This position is an outstanding opportunity for an early-career scientist to engage in collaborative research in marine microbial ecology and gain teaching and advising experience with a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students.
Ph.D. or "all-but-dissertation" status is required, along with strong experience in culture and experimental work with planktonic protists. The application must include a current curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing the applicant's research interests as well as other experience relevant to the position, and contact information for three professional references. Application materials should be e-mailed to spmc at cc.wwu.edu or sent by postal or courier service to Amy Fotheringham, Research Associate Position, 1900 Shannon Point Rd., Anacortes WA 98221 USA. Review of application materials will begin on August 1 and will continue until the position is filled. For information about the position, see http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~stromlab; for information about SPMC, see http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~spmc. WWU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
