The 9th Advanced Phytoplankton Course
Taxonomy and Systematics
will be held at the Stazione Zoologica "A. Dohrn", Napoli, Italy
from 5 to 26 April 2008
The Course aims at providing an updated background for the
morphology, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny of the most
important marine phytoplankton groups. It will consist of theoretical
and practical sessions, with the examination of a broad collection of
fixed, live and slide material. Topics of the Course will include:
- methods and criteria for species identification
- methods of molecular and morphological phylogeny
- overview of specialized literature
- toxic and potentially toxic species
- general and specific aspects of phytoplankton biodiversity and biogeography
WHO CAN APPLY:
The Course will be open to 20 students. Criteria for selection of
participants will include their previous experience in phytoplankton
taxonomy (min. 4 years), possible role as trainers in their respective
countries and involvement in ecological research and monitoring
programmes.
