Dear colleagues,
Luc and myself are starting a new long-term project. The aim is
relatively simple: gather good to perfect preservation samples in order
to create a reference collection.
Based on this collection, we wish to develop automatic recognition and
morphometrics studies. Obviously, this won't be completed in months but
rather through many years.
To complete this project, I call some help to anyone who will be willing
to contribute by sharing samples or knowledge on some sections and/or
drills.
*If you are interested in contributing, more details are available below
or you can contact me.*
Otherwise, sorry for the inconvenience
Yours sincerely
Baptiste Suchéras-Marx
Detailed project:
- gather samples and/or localities
The aim is to create a reference collection of calcareous nannofossil
from Triassic to Quaternary.
The collection will have bulk rock/sediment and prepared samples. Both
will be referenced in our collection system called CollecScience (and
then in Recolnat, a national database of french natural history museum)
and cured at Cerege. Associated with the samples/slides, a series of
metadata will be gathered like sampling site name, gps position, people
that gave the sample, associated publications, log, etc. You can also
share knowledge of known outcrop or section with good to very good
preservation.
- prepare samples
Reference slide will be prepared (method under consideration) and kept
also in the reference collection. Several slides will be prepared per
sample in case someone wish to borrow a slide and likely sem preparation
will also be done.
- study nannofossils/picture collection
This reference material will be also used to create an updated neural
network for automatic recognition. Our team is currently developing a
system and promote collaboration in that purpose.
The collection of nanno picture will also be used to develop knowledge
on morphometrics and mass of the various species.
- sharing and coming
We would be able to share the slides through loan and have people coming
to Cerege to work on the collection if wished.
All this project has the objective to promote conservation and
collaboration at the nannocommunity scale.
