The College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University (USA) and the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa (Israel) are seeking a PhD student for a dual degree program project to reconstruct Miocene North African climate and Mediterranean paleoproductivity. We aim to understand how Miocene polar ice expansion impacted global climate evolution, resulting in changes to North African monsoon and river drainage networks, affecting supply of nutrients to the central Mediterranean. This project will utilize samples from drill cores and outcrops in Malta, with field work planned to collect additional samples in Malta and Cyprus. We will collect a variety of sedimentological, geochemical, micropaleontological, and physical properties data for this multi-proxy study. The role of the PhD student is dependent on the student’s background and project preference, and could include (but is not limited to) calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and paleoceanography, organic geochemistry (including analysis of carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotopes), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and/or physical properties measurements. This project is a trilateral cooperation among Texas A&M University, the University of Haifa, and the University of Malta.

The PhD student will be based at either Texas A&M University (beginning August 2019) or the University of Haifa (beginning October 2019), but will need to spend at least 1 year in residence at the other university to meet requirements for the dual degree program. After successful completion of the program, the student will be award a PhD from both universities.

A MS or Diploma/BS degree in geosciences is required prior to enrollment in the program. Successful candidates should have broad Earth science interest, the ability to conduct a multi-proxy project with an international team of collaborators, and excellent English communication and writing skills.
