Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion. Duties/Project description This project aims at improving our understanding of the long-term adaptation strategies of marine algae in warm climates, by studying fossil time series over the last 5 million years. You will study deep-sea records at the fringes of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool, a region with the warmest ocean waters on Earth today (>28°C). During the Pliocene period (5.33-2.56 million years ago), temperatures were at least 2°C higher in this region and we will investigate how coccolithophores were adapted by quantifying their abundance, species composition and cell size variations. The microfossil data will be compared with paleoclimate data from the same tropical deep-sea archives sampled during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 356, in international cooperation (www.iodp.org; "Indonesian Throughflow”).
