From jstrail at usgs.gov Tue Nov 10 10:25:23 2015 From: jstrail at usgs.gov (Self-Trail, Jean) Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2015 08:25:23 -0500 Subject: [coccoliths] mystery? Message-ID: Hi all, These are SEM images of calcareous spheres from Lake Fryxell, Antarctica. The balls are calcareous, hollow, and about 10 to 20 microns in size. They were collected from below several meters of water and ice; the water is brackish and supersaturated in CaCO3. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas as to what these are? There are many examples of similar forms in both marine and freshwater. And look at the cell size - it is too big for a coccolithophorid. If I had time I could find a genus name for you.
