What relationships are there between the phytoplankton structure and the physical and chemical aspects of the paramo lakes of Colombia? Do the periods of precipitation confer a sufficient seasonal variation on the physical and chemical variables of the lake to lead to a seasonal change in phytoplankton? What are the main features of the relation between the biochemical processes in the lakes and the change of phytoplankton species? This study is the result of a joint effort by numerous institutions and individuals. It arose in response to the need, in principle, to know about and understand processes that take place within paramo lakes, such as productivity, biomass, trophy state, nutrient cycle, and variables integrated into climatic and biochemical change of the lacustrine system. The high mountain aquatic ecosystems that are the subject of this study lie far from the centers that generate science and technology and also represent forgotten areas that are depressed by unequal actions in the social and economic field. Consequently, comparing and contrasting the basic ecological characteristics of 20 paramo lakes of the Colombian cordilleras, although it was not an easy task, was a gratifying one. The fact of traveling throughout most of the paramos of the country motivated this study and even more keeping in mind that a high percentage of the scientific efforts are currently concentrated in the Andean zone.

PRICE:
65.00 EURO
US$ 89.70

Book ID: (098926)
Diatom Monographs
Edited by Andrzej Witkowski: Volume 12: Witak, Malgorzata: Application of diatom biofacies in reconstructing the evolution of sedimentary basins. The neotropical diatom flora is completely different from the flora of other continents and also different from the diatom flora of the temperate climatic zones of the subcontinent. About 700 taxa are documented here by 2515 micrographs. Most of them have been found exclusively in the tropical zone of South America where 202 are described as new taxa. Moreover, about 130 "morphotypes" are documented and taxonomically indeterminated (new) species. The extent of real endemic elements has still to be determined since identity and distribution of tropical diatoms are still poorly investigated. Nevertheless, it can be shown that many of these species are indicative characteristic elements of oligotrophic or oligodystrophic so-called clearwater- and blackwater rivers. Many established taxa so far recorded as a single specimen only or considered to be rare, have now been found to be widespread in different parts of Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela, where waters have not been under the negative influence of human activities.

PRICE:
174.00 EURO
US$ 240.12

Book ID: (076852)
Iconographia Diatomologica
Annotated Diatom Micrographs. Almost everywhere, even in supposed isolated areas and extreme altitudes, cosmopolitan diatoms have been found, which are also typical for Europe resp. the Holarctic. Remarkably some of the well known cosmopolitan diatoms from the Holarctic have not been found in the Andes. There are however a number cosmopolitan diatoms from the southern hemisphere resp. the Andes, which are lacking in Europe. This seems to be one of the main differences between the Andean and European species - associations. Another difference is the disovery of new species all over the Andes. The diatom associations in the Andes differ not only regionally very much, but even quite often locally. This volumes illustrates 3040 taxa for the Andes on photographic plates. 84 taxa have been described as new, some of them bound to altitudes above 3600 m only. 56 other found taxa seem to be new to science, too. The present book will be a starting point for further investigation. - The two additional contributions in this volume deal with the following subjects: 1) Diploneis ovalis sensu stricto und Diploneis krammeri nov. spec. Altogether 270 descriptions of new taxa from Central-Europe, Scandinavia, the Arctic, Asia Minor and South America were counted. It might be that his 123 taxa from South America are of special interest because comparatively little is known about the diatom flora of this continent. This documentation contains the protologues (including figures) of all the taxa introduced by Krasske. Moreover, all these taxa - so far as available in his collection- are represented by new microphotographs of the holotypes, lectotypes and/or other specimens from the type-slides or other authentic slides. Photographs are necessary since his diagrammatic figures are mostly of poor quality, and are therefore less significant. Many are hardly appropriate to recognize the depicted taxa. Attention! The indicated magnifications of the drawings are the original ones given by Krasske. They are not correct in several cases. Our corrections are to be found under "Bemerkungen" (remarks). In addition, some illegitimate taxa introduced by Krasske under manuscript names have been photographed. In several cases taxa or specimens, which have not been taken from Krasske's collection, are shown for comparison. Another aim of this monograph is to evaluate Krasske's taxa critically from the contemporary and likewise from the recent point of view (see "Zusammenfassung", p. 187). In particular, it is shown how many of his types (names) represent "biologically" confirmed taxa. We consider 152 worthy of belonging to this category... The taxa are arranged alphabetically with the generic, specific and infraspecific names originally given by Krasske. However, the genera are mostly arranged on the plates in "classical fashion" by Hustedt and other authors, and not alphabetically. Exceptionally, the centric genera and Eunotia are placed at the end of the plate series. Three species and one variety are described as new taxa.

PRICE:
98.00 EURO
US$ 135.24

Book ID: (086858)
Iconographia Diatomologica
Annotated Diatom Micrographs: Ed. by Horst Lange - Bertalot: Volume 15: Metzeltin, Ditmar, Horst Lange - Bertalot and Felipe Garcia - Rodriguez: Diatoms of Uruguay. 2005. 3604 microgr. on 241 pls. 737 p. gr8vo.
