w:st="on">Mississippi River</st1:place>. The North American Diatom Symposium is
held every two years at field stations throughout <st1:place w:st="on">North
America</st1:place> and is the premier venue for all aspects of diatom research.

style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt">21<SUP>st</SUP> NADS will be held at Flathead Lake
Biological Station (FLBS), the first time for this symposium to be held in
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Montana</st1:State></st1:place>.
To accommodate a group the size of NADS we will also use nearby campgrounds and
other accommodations where needed. FLBS is one of the oldest active
biological field research stations in the Unites States. It was established near
<st1:City w:st="on">Bigfork</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">MT</st1:State> in
1899 by its first director, Dr. Morton J. Elrod, UM Distinguished Professor of
Biology and it moved to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Yellow</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Bay</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> in 1908. Since its inception students
from around the country and the world have been coming to the station to learn
about biology firsthand. By 1977 year-round research was being conducted at the
Morton J. Elrod Laboratory and with construction of the state-of-the-art
Schoonover Freshwater Research Laboratory FLBS became one of the finest
freshwater research facilities in the country. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

w:st="on">Flathead</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. The grounds include a
spring-brook and an old growth stand of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and
larch. The station also has land on <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Bull</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Island</st1:PlaceType>
and <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Polson</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Bay</st1:PlaceType>, and co-manages the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Bird</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType

style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt">The North American Diatom Symposium (NADS) is a biennial
meeting normally held at field stations throughout the <st1:country-region
w:st="on">United States</st1:country-region> and <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place>. This meeting was first
held in 1970 at Cedar Creek (<st1:State w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:State>) and has
been hosted at field stations in <st1:State w:st="on">Florida</st1:State>,
<st1:State w:st="on">Colorado</st1:State>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Manitoba</st1:State>, <st1:State w:st="on">Kentucky</st1:State>,
<st1:State w:st="on">Alabama</st1:State>, <st1:State w:st="on">Ohio</st1:State>,
<st1:State w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:State>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Iowa</st1:State>, <st1:State w:st="on">Wisconsin</st1:State> and
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Michigan</st1:State></st1:place>. NADS usually attracts between
100-120 diatomists from <st1:place w:st="on">North America</st1:place> and
international diatomists as well who come for the student-friendly atmosphere,
diverse diatom topics, ample opportunities to network and socialize, the scum
run, collecting opportunities, and an evening auction to support student
travel. NADS is an informal society of diatomists, that is, there are no
formal officers or structure.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>
