Applications are invited for one
post-doctoral research fellowship (1 year contract) at IFREMER (Arcachon,
France) to work on the following subject:

Operational implementation
of automated or semi-automated analysis of phytoplankton composition in sea
water samples, with FlowCAM coupled to a specific version of PhytoImage
software, developed by Mons-Hainaut University (Belgium)

The French
phytoplankton monitoring network (REPHY) has acquired phytoplankton times series
for twenty years on numerous sampling stations along the coast. The method used
for identification and counting is very time-consuming and it is necessary to
improve it. The objective of this post doctorat is the implementation of a
coupled system of digitisation and phytoplankton picture analysis : after
digitisation by a FlowCAM, the picture analysis will be performed with a
specific version of PhytoImage software developed by Mons-Hainaut University (Pr
Philippe Grosjean). The first step of the work consists in training to FlowCAM
use (with the University), and in writing requirements (objectives to reach,
constraints). A second step is to build a training set of phytoplankton
pictures, which are representative of taxa encountered in REPHY samples, in
order to allow the University to finalize a new version of PhytoImage. A third
step is the analysis of the results required in real time with this new version,
and the operational implementation (procedures writing, training for
phytoplankton technicians). The premium collaboration with Mons-Hainault
University, as well as the innovative aspect (the use of such a tool in a
monitoring network would be very new) are strong points of this project.

Academic training and specific skills: A sharp competence in
marine phytoplankton taxonomy is required, as well as motivation for picture
analysis.

The closing date for applications is 26 September
2008.

For more information, see <A class=moz-txt-link-freetext
