ON BLUE-GREEN AND GREEN ALGAE

Friday 29 June - Monday 2 July
2007

Organisers: Professor Brian A. Whitton (Durham) and Dr David
M. John (Marie Curie Fellow, Martin Ryan Institute, NUI, Galway,
Ireland)

Venue: Hild-Bede College and School of Education,
University of Durham, Durham, UK

To provide training on
identification of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and green algae at a more
advanced level than included in the Introductory Course on Freshwater
Algae. The short course is planned especially for anyone who has
attended one of the introductory courses, but also for others with considerable
experience of field material or who would benefit from refreshing their
knowledge. Participants on previous advanced courses have included biological
staff from the UK Environment Agency, SEPA, water plcs and overseas
visitors. The course will focus on identification, especially modern
methods, such as the use of various CDs and information available from
websites.

The course runs from late afternoon on Friday 29
June to breakfast on Monday 2 July. Lectures and/or practicals run until
2100 on Friday and Saturday, while there will be a short field visit on Sunday
evening. Because the course is short, the only opportunities for field
visits will be very local.

The course organisers are Dr David John
(Marie Curie Fellow, MRI) and Prof. Brian Whitton (University of
Durham). Dr Alan Donaldson (consultant) will also
contribute.

Residence and meals are in Hild-Bede College. The
College is on a hill above the River Wear and has a fine view over the river and
city; it also has an excellent reputation for food and drink. Arrangements
can be made for special diet requirements. Parking is available inside the
college; it is helpful, but not essential, to know in advance if you plan to
bring a car.

Members are strongly encouraged to bring
fresh algal samples from their local waters, ideally together with a digital
image of the site. Everything else is provided, including access to
The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles (2002, John, Whitton &
Brook, eds) and three identification CDs. Some people may find it useful
to bring their own portable computer, if it can be used for CDs and the risk of
loss is covered by their own insurance. A manual for this course
will be distributed in advance.

Travel Durham is on the main
rail line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh. Trains are
about once an hour and the journey from London (260 miles) takes three
hours. Overseas members should contact the organizers for advice on
getting the cheapest ticket. A taxi from the station to Hild-Bede College
(about 1.5 miles, but a long hill for walkers) costs about £3.50.
The nearest airport is Newcastle-upon-Tyne. There is an easy rail
journey from the airport to Durham, though this involves changing at Newcastle
main rail station and the overall journey can take anything from one to two
hours, depending on the connection at Newcastle. A taxi from Newcastle
airport to Durham (26 miles) takes 35-45 minutes and costs about £40; the return
fare is cheaper if booked with a Durham taxi company The organizers
usually meet members at the airport, but this should be confimed well in
advance.

Cost The inclusive cost is £ 240 (no
VAT charge)

Booking Provisional and firm
